Being invited to a traditional Muslim marriage event is a feast for all the senses. From the colourful traditions to the delicious halal food, it is an event you will always remember. I had the privilege of being invited to such a wedding a couple of months ago when a dear friend of mine got married. The festivities amazed me but it also left me wishing that I was more familiar with these traditions. There are a lot of Muslim wedding customs that someone should be aware of when attending an Islamic wedding.

1. Salatul Ishtikharah

Translating in Arabic to ‘seeking the best from Allah’ Ishtikharah is a pre-wedding traditional prayer offered by someone who is facing uncertainty about marriage. Ishtikharah is a prayer to Allah to seek guidance and clarity.

Marriage, in Islam and all other religions, is a spiritual union among two souls. It not only affects the bride and groom but also their families and future progeny. To ensure that they make the right decision in choosing a partner, Ishtikharah is prayed by the family of someone looking for a partner.

Although not primarily for marriage, Ishtikharah is performed whenever life presents an overwhelming choice and someone decides to let Allah’s supreme will prevail for he only knows what is right.

2. Mangni

The Mangni in Islamic tradition is also known as the engagement. It is a pre-wedding tradition where the couple exchange rings and announce that they are soon to be wed in the presence of their families.

Traditionally, in an Islam wedding, a man who is looking for a partner needs to ask a woman her permission to marry her in the presence of their family. He is permitted to look her in the eyes when declaring his intentions and proposing betrothal. If the woman accepts then the family celebrates by exchanging gifts and indulging in festivities.

Although recently popularised, it is not common to give engagement rings in Islam.

3. Mahr

As a symbol of respect to the wife, the husband has to give her a gift as mandated in the marriage contract. The Islamic wedding present can be of any value given at the time of the ceremony. Sometimes the Mahr can also include a particular amount of money that the groom gives to the bride before and after the wedding.

This is a traditional Muslim custom which allows the groom to be creative and gift his bride something that she loves. Although obligatory, it is offered by the groom out of love for his wife.

The Mahr can typically be a gift of gold or even money and it is solely at the bride’s discretion to choose however she wants to use it. No one is allowed to pressure her in its use.

4. Mehndi

The Mehndi ceremony is done before the wedding takes place. The bride’s hands and feet are adorned with phenomenal henna designs. When you are planning your own wedding you might be concerned whether the Mehndi ceremony is traditional in Islam. The practice of applying mehndi on the bride’s feet and hands is actually encouraged in Islam as it is representative of her femininity and adherence to Islamic traditions.

5. Nikah

Nikah is the actual marriage ceremony where the bride and groom are officially married in the presence of at least 2 witnesses. A Muslim marriage in Islam requires the marriage contract to be signed during the Nikah ceremony. The bride and the groom during this ceremony repeat the traditional Qabul (translating to ‘I accept’ in Arabic).

The bride and groom are typically seated facing one another with a partition in between. 6. Reciting Al – Fatihah

After the Nikah is complete it is officially serenaded by the recitation of Al – Fatihah or the first chapter of the Quran.

It is typically done to give blessings to the newly married couple and offer them guidance for the future. It is among Islamic Muslim wedding tradition that upon the moment when Al-Fatihah is finished, the couple is married in the eyes of Allah.

The conclusion of an Islamic marriage ceremony after the Nikah can also include certain sermons being given as a way to offer more guidance to the married couple.

7. Walima

In Muslim religion marriage is followed by the Walima/ Walima is the traditional feast after the Nikah offered by the bride and groom to all the guests. Walima can take place immediately after the Nikah or sometimes even a few months after the ceremony. Although there is no foundation, Walima can typically last for a couple of days. The food of Walima is believed to be blessed.

In Muslim weddings, it is not uncommon to have a separate feast for the separate sexes. Although most weddings now do not partake in this custom, some might still choose to have different tables set for men and women.

You will typically not find any alcohol at any traditional wedding festivities because it is forbidden under Islam.

8. Rukhsati

Rukhsati is the ritual of the bride leaving her house to go to her husband’s adobe after all Muslim wedding rituals are finished. It is advised to get Rukhsati done as soon as possible as opposed to some people who choose to delay it for a couple of months due to certain reasons.
